Kumbh Mela, Prayag
Boy Detail

"nothing more impressive, picturesque and pregnant with meaning and significance than the Kumbh Mela can be witnessed in India…Until you have looked upon one of these tremendous gatherings of humanity, many aspects of Indian life and character may be hidden from you…"

Sidney Low, an Englishman traveling in India in 1906

The Kumbh Mela is a pilgrimage festival that is held on a twelve year cycle in four of India's sacred cities: Prayag (Allahabad), Hardwar, Nasik and Ujain. In January and February of 2001 the festival will return to Prayag. Approximately 20 million people are expected to make a pilgrimage to the city over the course of two months. I will be photographing the Kumbh Mela as part of my ongoing project to document the intersection of pilgrimage and sacred geography in India.

Listed below are resources to learn more about the festival. Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments or if you are planning on attending.
