The
Kumbh Mela is a pilgrimage festival that is held on a twelve year cycle
in four of India's sacred cities: Prayag (Allahabad), Hardwar, Nasik
and Ujain. In January and February of 2001 the festival will return
to Prayag. Approximately 20 million people are expected to make a pilgrimage
to the city over the course of two months. I will be photographing the
Kumbh Mela as part of my ongoing project to document the intersection
of pilgrimage
and sacred geography in India.
